An agonising defeat for Haileybury with St. Ed's kicking a penalty from the last play of the game. This was a great game with Haileybury going 7 nil up with a fine try and conversion for Finn Newton before a rally from the hosts to make it 17-7. Matt Wright and Nick Davis responded with fine tries to make it 17 a piece. Eddie Alliott then scored one the greatest Haileybury tries of all time, started by a break from that man Wright from his own line, tremendous link play put Alliott in space and the tireless No. 8 crossed from 30m out. Newton added the extras but they couldn't shake their hosts despite some fine play and they scored again to make it 24-22 at half time.
Debutant Tani Sanu showed excellent footwork to cross for a debut try , St Eds scored a clever try from a line-out play, Zac Crane scored another superb try. St Ed's equalised to make it level before the controversial finish. A tough one to take and a draw would have been a fair result. Haileybury need to find a way to win these close encounters!
